When someone leaves with a key
A former employee, a cleaning contractor, a tenant who moved out: if a key left with them, rekey the locks it opens. It costs less than replacing hardware, and it can be booked outside trading hours so the doors aren't apart while customers walk in.
Master key systems
One key for the owner, one for managers, single-door keys for everyone else. A master system needs planning: which doors, which people, what happens when a key is lost. Get that on paper before any pins are cut.
Exit doors and the fire code
Doors on an exit route must open from inside without a key or special knowledge. Never chain or padlock an exit door. A locksmith can fit exit devices that allow free exit while keeping the door secure from outside.
Leased space
Check your lease. Some landlords control the building's key system and need to approve changes.
